Excerpt from above site: The above images were made during the Heian period by Chosei, who was the number one pupil of Jocho, the famous sculptor of Buddhist images. They are made of single pieces of cypress wood and their clothing originally bore various painted patterns which have worn off with age. Heian period characteristics are the relatively small size of the head and the pose of slow yet deliberate movement.
Below Drawings from: Butsuzō-zu-i 仏像図彙, the “Collected Illustrations of Buddhist Images.” Published in 1783 (Genroku 元禄 3). One of Japan’s first major studies of Buddhist iconography. Hundreds of pages and drawings, with deities classified into approximately 80 (eighty) categories. Modern-day reprints are available at this online store (J-site).
