Fengxian Temple 奉先寺 Ancestor Worshipping Temple Carving began in 672, completed circa 672-675 AD Central Image = Vairocana Buddha (Jp. = Dainichi Nyorai) Seated atop lotus; 17 meters in height; limestone. Disciple Kasyapa (the elder) to left and disciple Ananda (the younger) to right. Followed by Manjusri (Monju) Bodhisattva (L) & Samantabhadra (Fugen) Bodhisattva (R). In the outer court are two of the four Heavenly Kings, and the two Vajrapani (Nio)
Says Sacred-Destinations.com: "This tableau of statues is a distilled replica of the Tang imperial court, with the dignified main Buddha representing the emperor (or empress), the obedient disciples representing the ministers, the richly dressed bodhisattvas evoking the imperial concubines, and the heavenly kings standing in for the warriors & soldiers."
